PACIFIC HEALTH PROVIDERS MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN NZ
(11-03-2013)

Pacific providers are now at the heart of their communities and making a tangible difference to Pacific health according to the Lalaga ‘Pacific providers making a difference’ report commissioned by the Ministry of Health.

The report compiled and written by Dr. Debbie Ryan, Nigel Beckford and Michael Fitzsimons is based on a combination of survey results and visits to Pacific health providers.

Former Director of Public Health, Dr. Colin Tukuitonga, said, “The healthcare needs of Pacific peoples can be met through services that are provided parallel to mainstream services. And the concept of ‘by Pacific for Pacific’ is integral to this. It is about moving from being passive recipients to active participants in care.”

In 2009 there were 39 Pacific providers with various models of practice, management and governance; making a positive contribution around New Zealand in a wide range of areas.

Dr. Api Talemaitonga said, “They are improving access to primary healthcare and specialists; they are increasing immunisation and screening rates; they are helping address the underlying cause of ill health such as poor housing, education, nutrition and exercise. These are real gains.”

The reach of Pacific providers extends beyond the doctor’s surgery. Providers like Health Star Pacific have a regional coverage through its community health events and a national reach with its weekly radio programmes.
