PACIFIC YOUNG PEOPLE EXPERIENCE WORST ORAL HEALTH OUTCOMES
(11-03-2013)

Health Star Pacific is very concerned with the findings from the NZ Oral Health Survey that... Pacific children and adolescents experience the worst oral health outcomes.

As part of its Oral Health service, Health Star Pacific conducted its own survey at last year’s Auckland Secondary Schools Polynesian Festival with 202 young people taking part.

The ethnicities were evenly distributed among Pacific Islands. 70% of those surveyed were 13 -17 years of which the majority reside in Counties Manukau area (72.8%).

An interesting finding is that the message of brushing at least twice a day is one young people follow with over 90% stating that they do this.

Easy tips to look after your teeth:

1. Remember to brush your teeth twice a day, especially after eating and before going to bed.

2. Eat more fruits and veggies for snacks instead of biscuits and lollies.

3. Drink milk or water NOT cordial and fizzy drinks.

4. Remember FREE regular checks for children.

So if young people are brushing then why do they experience the worst oral health outcomes?

The possible reasons are poor nutrition and not having regular dental checks.

The survey also highlight that flossing was a new phenomenon to just under 50% of those that participated. Recommendation from MOH key messages is that we floss at least once a day to remove food stuck in between teeth.

The Health Star Pacific survey has provided a baseline to help plan and carry out better ways of getting the message to our young Pacific people in turning the curve from having the worst oral health outcome to being the best in the area of Oral Health.
